The Health Benefits of Owning a Cat

Owning cat can provide psychological and physical health benefits, particularly for children, seniors, and those with medical conditions or disabilities.

Cat ownership helps children to learn responsibility and develop a greater capacity for empathy at an early age. In addition, pets provide unconditional love and acceptance, which can help children through difficult times.

Improved Immune Function

Cats also offer protection against certain physical conditions. If adopted before or shortly after a child is born, owning a cat reduces the risk of developing animal allergies, asthma, and possibly other illnesses as well. One study found that children living with pets were 13-18% less likely to miss school due to illness than children without pets. Researchers who measured the salivary immunologobulin levels of young pet owners found that their immune function was less likely to be in the sub-normal range than that of non-pet-owners. Additionally, cats can provide particular therapeutic benefits for children with conditions such as autism, especially those who suffer from motor coordination problems.

Physical and Mental Health Benefits

Pet ownership reduces the risk of many physical and mental health problems for adults as well. Stroking a cat reduces blood pressure, and cat owners tend to have lower triglycerides, which reduces their risk of developing and dying from cardiovascular disease.

Pet ownership has also been shown to boost the levels of mood-regulating neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. As such, pets can reduce feelings of loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other negative states.

Pets also reduce the likelihood of suffering from physical problems, which is evident in the fact that pet owners require fewer visits to the hospital on average. Studies conducted in Germany and Australia found that those with companion animals visited the hospital 15% less often than those without pets. In China, pet owners saw even greater benefits, with 20% fewer hospital visits.

Reduced Risk of Heart Attack

Elderly people are particularly likely to benefit from the health-protective effects of cat ownership. Those with cats are less inclined to suffer heart attacks, their blood pressure is lower on average, they report less tension and stress, and they live longer overall.

A University of Minnesota study of 4,435 people found that those who did not own cats were 30-40% more likely to die of cardiovascular disease, even if they owned dogs. Researchers are unsure as to why dogs did not provide the same cardiovascular protective benefits as cats. However, dogs provide many other benefits including improved psychological health and reduced doctor visits, as well as encouraging their owners to get regular exercise.

Therapy Animals

The health benefits that cats and dogs can offer have become widely recognized in recent years. As a result, many pets are being put into service as therapy animals, helping to improve the psychological and physical health of children, the elderly, and those who suffer from medical problems. This growing field is proving to have many potential applications, and cats have even been used to aid in the rehabilitation of prisoners.

Symptoms of CRI in Cats Chronic Renal Insufficiency or Chronic Renal Failure in Felines

Chronic renal insufficiency (CRI), also known as chronic renal failure (CRF), is a common cause of death among older cats.

Kidneys regulate electrolytes and eliminate waste products. With CRI, kidney function is diminished, so waste accumulates in the body, poisoning the cat. If the condition is detected early and treated, cats may have many happy, active years before they succumb to the condition.

Cats can get CRI at any age, but it is most common in older cats. Abyssinian, Balinese, Burmese, Maine Coon, and Russian Blue cats have a slightly greater risk of developing CRI than other breeds.

Causes of CRI

In addition to environment, age and genetics likely play a role in the development of CRI. Other possible contributing factors include kidney disease, high blood pressure, acidified diets that are low in potassium, and dental disease. Regular dental care can help prevent the development of bacteria in the mouth that contributes to CRI.

Symptoms

The earliest symptoms of CRI are increases in both thirst and urination. Cats with more advanced CRI will have some of the following symptoms:

  • Nausea/gagging/vomiting/gastritis
  • Drooling
  • Licking lips
  • Dehydration
  • Decreased appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Muscle loss
  • Lethargy/depression
  • Weakness
  • Oral ulcers
  • Noise sensitivity
  • Ammonia smell
  • Dull coat
  • Constipation

At the later stages, cats may experience detached retina, very low body temperature, coma, or convulsions. Many older cats develop hyperthyroidism, which can make CRI symptoms less noticeable initially.

Other Conditions That May Occur with CRI

There are a number of conditions that often occur in conjunction with CRI, including:

  • Anemia – causes weakness and loss of appetite; symptoms include pale or bluish nose, gums, or tongue. Treatment options include medication and transfusion.
  • Constipation – caused by inadequate water consumption; treatment includes adding more fiber to the cat’s diet, adding water to the cat’s food, and/or administering subcutaneous (Sub-Q) fluids (which are injected into the scruff of the neck).
  • Dehydration – you can check for this by pinching a bit of skin on the cat’s neck – if it doesn’t immediately fall back, the cat is dehydrated. Dehydration can be treated by encouraging the cat to drink more or administering Sub-Q fluids.
  • Hypertension – this serious condition can cause more kidney damage, cardiovascular problems, blindness, and seizures. Diagnosis can be made by a veterinarian, and the condition is treatable with medication if discovered early on. In some cases, blindness can be reversed if the cat receives medication within approximately 24 hours of onset.
  • Hypokalemia – caused by potassium depletion, symptoms include muscle weakness, difficulty in holding the head up, stiffness, tiring easily, and difficulty moving. Veterinarian-prescribed potassium supplements can be used to treat the condition.
  • Hyperkalemia – this condition of excess potassium can lead to heart failure and other problems. Owners may accidentally cause this by overdosing their cats on potassium if they attempt to supplement without guidance from a veterinarian.
  • Mouth and Tongue Ulcers – these contribute to weight loss and speed a cat’s decline. Bad breath may be a symptom. Ulcers can be treated with antibiotics and other medications.
  • Stomach problems – nausea, vomiting, and stomach irritation are common in CRI cats, and can contribute to anorexia and weight loss. A veterinarian can prescribe medications that will alleviate nausea and other stomach problems.

Treatment

Older cats should be tested regularly for CRI during veterinary check-ups. Common at-home CRI treatments include dietary changes and Sub-Q fluid therapy. In the case of life-threatening dehydration, cats may require intravenous (IV) fluids. These are administered by a veterinarian, and most cats receiving them must stay in the hospital for 1-5 nights. Once the cat is rehydrated, she can usually come home, but her owner may need to administer Sub-Q fluids at home.

Many cats with CRI suffer a crisis in which they become very ill, appear to be at death’s door, and then bounce back completely for quite some time. Eventually these crises get closer and closer together, and the owner must decide when it is time to say goodbye. In the interim, with proper treatment, a CRI cat can enjoy a high quality of life.

3 Keys to Cat Flea Control

3 Keys to Cat Flea Control

Drs. Foster & Smith Educational Staff

The short and long of flea control

Oftentimes, you are not aware your pet has a flea problem until the damage is done and your home is infested with them.

Fleas are a common cat concern and although most cat fleas do not actually live on humans, they can bite humans and cause skin irritation. Regular preventive treatment should ensure that your cat does not have fleas, but if you are dealing with a flea infestation, cleaning and spraying the environment with a flea control preparation will stop the problem immediately.
  1. Why control fleas...

While many cats live with fleas and show minimal signs of infestation, control is advisable because:

    • The cat flea carries the larval stage of the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum. Cats can be infested with these worms by eating fleas during grooming.

    • Fleas have the potential to transmit other infectious agents.

    • Adult fleas feed on cats' blood, and in young kittens, this can cause anemia. Anemic kittens are weak.

    • Some cats develop an allergy to flea saliva, which causes them to scratch excessively or to develop skin disease.

    • Cat fleas can cause itchy bites on sensitive humans.

  2. Remove fleas in the environment

Regular preventive treatment ensures that your cat does not have fleas and keeps you and your pet happy.Frequent vacuuming can help to reduce, but not eliminate, environmental infestation. Vacuum bags should be disposed of to prevent collected immature flea stages continuing to develop in the house. Even though it is expensive and time-consuming, all soft furnishings should be treated. All nooks and crannies should be included, such as gaps between floorboards and moldings. Treatment of the whole house is essential. Anything that is heavily infested, such as pet bedding, should be treated with a flea control product, laundered, or thrown out.

  3. Long term flea control

Once the adult fleas have been removed from all the animals in the house and the environment, prevention should be considered. Flea control products come in many forms: collars, shampoos, sprays, foams, powders, and monthly topicals or oral liquids.

We firmly believe that prevention is the best guard against a flea problem. The monthly flea preventives we recommend that include Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) or Insect Development Inhibitors (IDIs) are very safe because they act on receptors that are not present in mammals, only in insects. They have excellent safety profiles enabling the treatment of kittens from a young age. We recommend monthly topicals to our clients and have several effective choices for cats:

    • Frontline Plus contains fipronil, an adulticide and S-Methoprene, an IGR, to eliminate all forms of the flea life cycle.

    • Frontline Top Spot is a topical product that eradicates adult fleas with the insecticide fipronil.

    • Advantage kills adult fleas and flea larvae and is also a topical product. It contains the insecticide imidacloprid.

    • bioSpot SPOT ON contains an IGR, methoprene, to kill juvenile forms of fleas, and it contains an insecticide to kill adult fleas. Plus, this product also kills and repels ticks and mosquitoes, for even broader protection in a single dose.

One oral preventive that we recommend is Program containing the IDI lufenuron, which halts development of flea eggs. The flea has to bite the cat in order to ingest the IDI and, therefore, would not be the preventive of choice for cats that have flea bite dermatitis.

Remember that if you have treated your cat with a spray or mist, do not use a topical preventive immediately afterward. Always follow manufacturer's guidelines, and never use products labeled for dogs on your cat.

Keeping Your Cat Healthy and Happy (Frontline Plus For Cats)

By Carol Stack

Cats make great pets. They are quieter than dogs, require less care, and can provide their owners with plenty of attention and love.

Also, cats adjust well to indoor living, take great care in grooming themselves, and are easily trained to use a cat box. For these reasons they can live in an apartment as well as a large house.

But there are some diseases that can strike your cat even if you are giving the best of care. Here are a few.

Ringworm

Ringworm is a common skin disease in cats and dogs. Cats usually pick up the disease from contaminated objects such as clippers or bedding or by coming in direct contact with other animals infected with this disease.

One to two tablespoons of colloidal silver should get rid of ringworm on your cat in about one week, or you can take them to the vet for medication.

Diabetes

Some cats become diabetic. Its scary when you first know your cat has diabetes but once you start understanding the disease and get more used to the monitoring it, it becomes easier for you and your kitty. Informing yourself of the disease is crucial. It is not the same as human diabetes.

Obesity

Obesity is the most common nutritional disease in pets; estimates suggest that up to 45% of dogs and up to 13% of cats are obese (many doctors think these estimates are quite low judging by the number of obese pets they see every day in practice).

The only thing you can do is regulate how much food they eat. If your cat is overweight, don't leave dry food out all the time. Begin feeding him or her once in the morning and once in the evening.

Basic Care for Your Cat

The best things you can do for your cat is to keep him or her inside away from cars and other dangers, give your cat plenty of water and a healthy, balanced diet that is high in protein, and brush him or her daily. Daily brushing will help prevent hairballs, which is a common malady for cats.

Aside from those basic things, keep poisonous plants out of your home or yard, and keep your home free from any small strings or objects that your cat might accidentally swallow. It's fairly common to hear of cats that have swallowed an object such as a string, and dying from the resulting obstruction in his digestive system.

Fleas

Fleas multiply fast and do not voluntarily leave the body of the pet. Fleas can transmit tapeworms and cause itchy allergic reactions, which can lead to scratching, hair loss, and infection.

It is highly recommended that at the first sign of fleas you put something on your cat to get rid of the fleas, such as Frontline or Advantage. Don't let fleas take over.

Infections

Urinary tract infections are another health danger for cats. If your cat suddenly stops using the litter box, a urinary tract infection is suspect.

Conclusion

Cats can be wonderful companions. With some basic care and a lot of love, they can be your good friend for many years.

Cheap Frontline Flea and Tick Treatment - Deal or No Deal?

By Ann Wong

“Cheap Frontline Flea and Tick Medicine Available”

“Best Price For Frontline Flea and Tick Control”.

“Cheapest Offer For Frontline Flea and Tick Killer”

These adverts could easily be found if you do a search for frontline flea and tick products. With it’s increasing popularity, they can easily be purchased anywhere, from your veterinarian, pet shops and conveniently online. With so many great offers, it’s no doubt that pet owners like to make a comparison on the prices and tendency is that they will go for a supply with the lowest price offered. However with the increasing number of counterfeits available in the market now, is it a wise choice to just simply go for one, base solely on price alone?

Many of these frontline flea and tick medicine counterfeits look very much like the genuine ones with regard to the packaging and it may be difficult to tell the difference if one is not familiar with the product at all. As such many unsuspecting buyers, especially first-time consumers are very likely to be caught unaware.

These products are pesticides, and therefore, are very carefully regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Because they are systemic products, which travel through the blood stream of the treated cat or dog, it is extremely important to read the labels carefully, and to follow the directions completely; i.e., avoid "off-label" use.

One major problem with these counterfeits version of the pesticides is that the labeling may differ enough from the genuine products. The packaging may also omit certain important cautionary material, so that the wrong dosage may actually be used. Many of these bogus frontline flea and tick medication have been repackaged in countries outside the U.S. They are usually just relabeled to appear to be the genuine article, and then illegally imported back into the U.S. for sale to unsuspecting buyers. The main problem lies in the relabelling and often mislabelling and these may include one or more of the following:

* The proper usage and warnings statements may not be stated on the label
* The proper dosage and weight requirements of the pet may not be reflected on the label.
* The label may have confusing instructions regarding the dosage and weight of the pet because it uses the metric system rather than conventional US measurements.
* The label may not include the manufacturer i.e. Merial's special toll-free number for customers to call with questions about FRONTLINE products and to seek help in occurrence of side effects

All this may end up putting pets treated at high risk of under dose or overdose and the resulting side effects can be fatal. However, having said that, a monthly treatment using this product to get rid of fleas and ticks effectively can be a financial strain on pet owners and the urge to buy from cheap sources of supply will always remain attractive. As such, it’s important that you learn to recognize and differentiate the genuine ones from the counterfeits. You can find out more details on "Frontline Flea And Tick Products – How to Avoid Counterfeits” in my website.

The Joy of Cats (Frontline Plus For Cats)

By Michelle Bery

In the ongoing battle of cats versus dogs, pet owners continue to sing the praises of their animal of choice. While dogs are vastly considered to be the more family-friendly pet, cats have their own equally enthusiastic fan club that can easily rattle off the attributes of their feline in-residence. The truth is that cats – loyal, loving, and often misunderstood – are just as popular in the world of pets as their canine counterparts.

The history of cats goes back nearly 9,000 years to ancient civilizations. Always the skilled predators, cats were often relied upon to keep vermin at bay. But there is also speculation that cats were kept as house pets as early as 7,500 BC. We do know that ancient Egyptian civilizations revered cats – so much so that anyone convicted of killing a cat was put to death. Cats were often even mummified along with their owners.

Today’s domesticated cats are beloved fixtures in many a home, a valued and loved member of the family. There are literally dozens of breeds of cats from which to choose – the personalities of each separate and distinct. Deciding which of these beautiful cats would best be suited to your home and family is largely dependent on the disposition of the cat in relation to your lifestyle. There are many breeds of cats that – in keeping with their species’ tradition of independence – are completely ambivalent about human interaction. There are other breeds of cats, however, that enjoy and seek out the company of their human owners. The choice is ultimately dependent upon your own personality as it relates to pets.

Choosing to own cats means a dedication to being a responsible and caring owner; be sure to research the responsibilities of cat ownership including the nutritional needs of your cat, space considerations, and veterinary appointments.

Cats are wonderful pets and companions and having one in your home can be a joy for you and your family. Choose your cat wisely and prepare for an addition to your family.

Compare Topical Flea Medications - Finding the Best For Your Pet

By Paul Kramer

As much as you value the health of your pet dogs, it is recommended that you compare topical flea medications in order to arrived at the most effective treatment for your dog's case. Fleas are among the most common parasites that infest our pets and so veterinarians are still looking for effective treatment to not only remedy but fully eliminate this condition.

However, not many realize that the dosage and form of medication given to their pets are essential determiners of the success (or failure of treatment applied). Hence, before you continue shopping for applications or treatment to administer to your pets, why not look into several factors that would enhance the effectiveness of the treatment applied.

The first thing you need to understand is that not all dogs are the same. They have different body structure, body weight, and age; hence you cannot expect one type of medication in the same dosage to work effectively for all. Since there are several flea and tick control products in the market, we will aim to discuss only those most commonly used and widely available in the market.

Advantage® flea and tick control are effective in several ways. First, they kill adult fleas and stop the development of smaller fleas. You must administer this medication to your pet topically on a monthly basis. However, you cannot apply this medication to dogs that are less than 8 weeks old. The active ingredient for this medication is Fipronil.

K9 Advantix, which consists mainly of Permethrin and Imidacloprid, is also administered to your pet topically on a monthly basis. It is best recommended for use on dogs that are at least 8 weeks old. By using K9 Advantix, you will effectively eliminate adult fleas that infest your pet dog's body, as well as those developing ones. Meanwhile, it is also effective against ticks, which serve as carriers for Lyme Disease, and mosquitoes.

Frontline® has Fipronil as active ingredient, while Frontline Plus® also contains Methoprene IGR aside from Fipronil. Both flea medications are applied topically once per month and for dogs not younger than 8 weeks.

While both Frontline® and Frontline Plus® are effective in killing adult fleas and ticks, only the former is able to stop the life cycle of younger fleas and prevent them from developing further. Hence, if you are aiming for not only temporary relief from fleas but want to full elimination, Frontline® might be the better option for your pet.

Fleas have been a long time problem experienced by pets. Therefore, it is not enough that you purchase medications that you hope will provide the solution to your problem. Maintain your immediate environment's cleanliness because if you do not, then there might be several fleas and ticks that could thrive in moist and damp areas. Another thing that you have to bear in mind is that you must have enough knowledge on how to properly and effectively administer the medications you provide for your pet. Compare topical flea medications for a more satisfying result and a healthier pet!

Book Review - the Beauty of Cats (Frontline Plus For Cats)

By Lance Winslow

Ever wonder what cats are thinking, why they keep schedules, or sleep all day? Yes, indeed, no one can deny that sleep is a wonderful thing, who can deny it. Indeed, in my next life I am coming back as house cat in a really nice family. I will expect gourmet food and a comfy couch to nap on and some cool play toys! Most cats seem to take these things for granted, but really they are happy to have a nice home, that's why they purr so much. Would you like to learn more about cats? Well, let me recommend a very good book to you then;

"The Beauty of Cats" by Howard Loxton - 1972.

The book starts with a couple of great pages of Cat Poetry, then gets into things in the first chapter discussing the issues with the big cats, like lions, tigers, cheetahs and wild other ferocious cats like Mountain Lions, bob cats and such. Much different than house cat species as the author shows through pictorials and explanation of some of the most popular cats that people own as house cats or show cats.

Learn about the history of sacred cats, cat art and the mystery of cats. The book also gets into the types of food cats in the wild eat and the types of cat food they love, and the unfortunate parasites and diseases that they attract and how and when it's time to see a vet. This is a wonderful coffee table book about cats that is great for young or old, cat lovers or cat owners. I highly recommend this book, if you love cats.

Big Cat (Frontline Plus For Cats)

By Omer Ashraf

Lets first establish what big cats are - i mean how are they differentiated from small cats... There is actually some argument on this issue in certain circles!

Generally speaking big cats are 1) Wild and 2) Considerably bigger than the small domestic or wild cats (a Siberian tiger for instance may be up to 100 times heavier than our 8 pound domestic feline). Other commonly used classifying method is the ability to roar. Big cats have an elongated larynx and elastic hyoid bone that enables them to roar (and prevents them from purring). Small cats are the opposite. Their hyoid bone is ossified, thus they are unable to roar, and may only purr.

Other interesting difference is the shape of pupils. All big cats have round pupils and small cats, apart from lynx, have slit-like pupils (exaggerated in bright light). Also big cats usually consume their meals lying down, apart from snow leopard, whereas cats - as we all know- eat in a sitting position!
Many of the earlier classifications used to include only four species: Tiger, Lion, Jaguar and Leopard into big cats. However, today big cats are expanded to include also Cougar, Snow Leopard, Clouded Leopard and Cheetah.

Despite significant differences in size in all the big and small cats, all felines are remarkably similar in their basic body make-up and sensory perceptions. They have similar attributes and hunting and behavior profiles in most cases. They are in short a true representation of Nature's masterwork in creation. With grace and elegance, big cats are master predators and hunters!

Frontline Flea Treatment Side Effects - What We Need to Know

By Paul Kramer

Frontline flea treatment contains Fipronil. An insecticide that causes hyperexcitation of contaminated insects' nerves and muscles. It remains effective even after bathing or swimming. Frontline kills most fleas before they bite, which is great for pets suffering from flea allergies. Apply this between the shoulder blades.

Frontline kills fleas and ticks for 30 days or more. It is safe to use on puppies at ten weeks and kittens at 12 weeks of age, when used as directed. Fipronil, the powerful active ingredient in Frontline flea treatment, collects naturally in the hair follicles and oil-producing glands of the skin, where it remains protected from removal by shampooing or swimming.

Then it continually reapplies itself to the hair, providing long lasting control for a month or more. It is packaged with 3 separate applications per pack, a three month supply for one pet. It provides convenient and effective flea and tick control for dogs and cats, puppies and kittens. It is effective against all stages of the brown dog tick, the American dog tick, lone star tick and deer ticks.

Pets may experience some temporary irritation at the site of product application. If signs persist or become more severe within a few days of application, consult a veterinarian immediately. This product is for external use on dogs and puppies 10 weeks or older and cats and kittens 12 weeks or older. Consult a veterinarian before using on medicated animals, animals using this product with other pesticides, and debilitated, aged, pregnant or nursing animals.

This product is flammable. Keep away from heat and open flame. This product is harmful to humans if swallowed. Call a physician or poison control center. Drink 1 or 2 glasses of water and induce vomiting unless patient is unconscious. This product can cause eye injury. Flush eyes with plenty of water.

Call a physician if irritation persists. Persistent irritation may be the cause of allergies. Along with medicating our pets, we must also take precautionary measures to safeguard ourselves from being contaminated. Washing our hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling will free us from infection and viral transmission. We can be carriers of fleas if we are not careful.

It is important to understand our pet's health conditions. A simple health illness may lead to complications and may cause death of our animals. Only we know the real condition of our pets and only we can prevent the disease to worsen. If we act upon seeing the signs and symptoms, we can save our pets from acquiring any type of disease.

Let our pets be checked regularly by a vet. We have the responsibility to take care of these creatures while they are on our care. Proper hygiene is the most important factor to consider in order to prevent viral infection or flea growth. Give your dog a bath once daily. Just like humans, they need to be clean and fresh all the time. Provide them with shampoo and soap. Always make sure they have clean shelter, and they do not go littering outside dirty areas. Free your pets from ticks and fleas with the Frontline Flea treatment.

Prevention and Control Feline Leukemia for Cat

By Aaheroe M

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) remains one of the most important causes of disease and death in cats. It causes a variety of malignancies, but persistent infection can also cause severe immunosuppression and profound anemia. The virus is present worldwide.
Prevention and Control: A test and removal program to rid catteries and multicat households of FeLV can be extremely effective if these guidelines are carefully followed:

1) All cats should be tested for FeLV viremia (IFA is best).

2) All viremic cats should be removed.

3) All dishes, litterpans, and bedding should be disinfected.

4) All movement of cats in and out of the cattery should be prevented.

5) All cats should be retested after 12 weeks to detect cats that may have been incubating the virus at the time of the first test.

6) The quarantine can be lifted when all cats have tested negative on two consecutive occasions, 12 weeks apart.

7) All cats should be tested and quarantined before introduction to the cattery. Ideally, two tests 12 wk apart should be done.

8) Breeding should be only to cats known to be FeLV-negative, and cats should be introduced only from FeLV-negative colonies.

FeLV vaccines are intended to protect cats against FeLV infection or, at least, to prevent persistent viremia. Types of vaccines include killed whole virus, subunit, and genetically engineered. Vaccines may vary in protective effect, and manufacturers' claims and independent comparative studies should be carefully noted. The following guidelines for vaccine use have been recommended:

1) Only healthy, afebrile (no fevers) cats should be vaccinated.

2) Cats from a high-risk or unknown background should be tested for FeLV before vaccination.

3) All cats at risk of exposure to FeLV should be vaccinated.

4) Positive and Negative cats should be kept separated, even if the negative cats have been vaccinated.

Flea and Tick Problems (Frontline plus for Cats)

By Sylvia Einwechter

Summer is the hardest time of year for your pets. Not only do they have to deal with the heat but they have to deal with all those squirmy critters too. If you have a flea and tick problem I'll give you a few facts and remedies to deal with this problem. I don't recommend spraying your yard because dogs and cats tend to eat grass and other plants in your yard and also will get dirt on their pads and could get sick from the yard spray.

The first thing I would do is get rid of the fleas on my pets. Give your dog a bath, but not your cat. Cats don't like baths too much and they don't need it. Giving your dog a bath gets rid of a lot of the fleas on them. When you give your dog a bath make sure you use a plain dog shampoo not a flea shampoo because we don't want to double dose your pet. Make sure your pet is dry and then I recommend either Frontline Plus or Advantix or Revolution. These three work the best I promise you. I have six little dogs and believe me I know what works. Revolution is great because it also kills heartworms and other worms too. But you must be careful to get your pets tested for heartworm first and then you can use Revolution every month after that with no fear of getting your pets tested every month as long as you give them the Revolution every single month even in winter. Pests can hang around even in the winter months.

After your pets are all done now you must take care of your house. Vacum everything, rugs, couches, chairs, anything that your pets sit on. Wash all blankets and pet beds every few days until you get rid of the fleas. That includes your beds and blankets too. Then I would get a good flea spray for the house, not the kind that go on your pets. There is a difference. If you don't have the money for a good spray then I recommend moth balls or moth ball flakes but you also have to be careful with these. Pets can eat them and get sick. I would put them wherever your pets can't get at them. I put them under all my furniture and in corners only if your pets don't go there.

Now that your pets are taking care of and your house is taken care of you should be pest free in about a couple of days believe me with six dogs I know what works. It's a good idea to keep giving your pets the flea treatments all year long especially the Revolution because of the heartworm medication. If you already give your pet a heartworm pill then you can just go with Frontline Plus or Advantix. Now your done and you can enjoy the summer with your pets.

Cat Chat - The Communication Between Cat Whisperer and Felines

By Kelvin Westly
A cat whisperer is a person who communicates with cats better than other cat owners. But they communicate so much better with cats such that their conversations are sometime what we called as a cat chat.

They are just people who are lucky enough to have a cat show up at their doorstep. Plus they are very successful with that cat.

Many a times, cats such as the black cats and alley cats will "knock" at someone's door and decided to move into their homes. The reasons can be many, such as being abandoned or just taken a liking for that particular person's house.

Many people will assume that a cat whisperer is being regarded as a therapist for cats, as they can understand the felines about their needs and wants as if they are having a conversation with them all the time. Plus, most of the entire whisperers did not go through any kind of training but they just know it naturally.

Abused or mistreated felines have been traumatized and will not respond to anyone other than a cat whisperer. Others who wanted to help the cat will only make matters worse by making the cat feel scared and afraid.

Cats that have been mistreated previously will not trust anyone so easily. They are often traumatized and confused and they feel pain just like humans do. You can always know which cat is being physically abused by the sight of it. But emotionally depressed felines can be perfectly healthy but emotionally, they have been wrecked. Thus, they are harder to understand, especially if they are strays initially.

Conversely, the whisperers can communicate with both physically and emotionally abused cats via their special "cat chat" ability. Cats instinctively know who can be their cat whisperer - one who they sense trust with. Felines are familiar with cat whisperers, but they are unknown to most people. Although a cat whisperer can communicate better with cats, time is still the catalyst to help heal the abused cat.

Heartgard For Cats (Frontline Plus For Cats

By J. Everett Myers

Heartgard is the #1 choice of veterinarians for heartworm disease prevention in dogs. But did you know that the preventative is also used for the control of heartworms in cats?

Heartgard For Cats was the first preventive made for our feline pets. Manufactured by Merck, it is the only preventative specifically designed for cats and is recommended for use in cats 6 weeks of age and older. It also treats and controls roundworms and hookworms.

Heartgard for Cats has a wide margin of safety for all sizes and breeds of cats. it should be given at monthly intervals when mosquitoes potentially carrying infective heartworm larvae are active.

Medications are available for two weight ranges and in two strengths; up to 5lbs and 5-15lbs; and 55mcg and 165mcg, which refer to two weight ranges respectively.

Heartgard for Cats comes in a real-beef chewable that cats love, and can be offered to your cat by hand or may be added to a small amount of cat food. It comes in 6-dose dispensing packs.

Heartgard Plus is also 100% effective against heartworms; plus it controls roundworms and hookworms in dogs and cats.

It is available as flavored chewable tablets and should be chewed rather than swallowed whole. The medicine is approved for puppies and kittens as young as 6 weeks of age.

The tablets come in a 6 month or convenient new 12 month supply. And just like Heartgard, Heartgard Plus is available only through a licensed veterinarian.

Heartworm Disease is a real threat, even to cats who live strictly indoors. Heartgard for Cats will help control and prevent heartworms in your cat. But remember, it is available only through a licensed veterinarian. And you should be to consult with your vet before beginning any preventative program.

Preventing Parasitic Diseases in Cats

By Randy Jones

Internal and external parasites are responsible for the vast majority of illnesses and disorders seen in dogs. The common dog flea is the number one health problem facing these pets. Chewing and scratching are the common signs of a flea “allergy” caused when a dog is bitten by a flea and the allergy develops and continues even after the fleas are long gone. Fleas are also disease carriers and can threaten the dog’s health as well.

If you’ve tried all the powders, sprays, and shampoos, you might want to get a more dedicated treatment. The three products most used by Veterinarians are Program, Advantage, and Frontline. The really great thing about all three products is that each is dedicated to one purpose, elimination fleas, and you only need to use them once a month.

The oldest of these medications is Program. It is an oral drug that affects only the flea, not your pet. It works by sterilizing the flea so that no more young are produced. Since flea larvae make up over 50% of the flea population, this is very effective at breaking the flea life cycle. After 60 to 90 days, (2-3 treatments), Program will reach its maximum effectiveness, and will only need one treatment each month thereafter to maintain.

Advantage and Frontline are topical products that are placed on the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. They then spread over you pet’s body and will paralyze and then kill any flea coming in contact with the product. These flea products are especially useful for those pets that are flea allergic, as the flea doesn’t have to bite to be eliminated.

Advantage eliminates fleas within 12 hours after contact, before they lay eggs to prevent re-infestation. It has a waterproof formula that won’t wash off and continues working even when the dog gets wet. Frontline comes in 2 forms, regular Frontline, and Frontline Plus. Both Frontline formulas are waterproof, but have the added benefit of eliminating ticks as well. While regular Frontline kills both fleas and ticks for up to 1 month, Frontline Plus continues to kill fleas for up to 3 months.

All the products mentioned are safe for your pet and have been used by Veterinarians for many years. In addition, Program can be used along with either of the topicals for complete protection. Most Veterinarians recommend Program for year round use, and then add Advantage or Frontline during the worst of the flea season (April to October).

Effective Flea and Tick Control With Frontline Plus for Cats

By Mike Long

For fast-acting, long-lasting control of fleas, ticks and chewing lice, a product like Frontline Plus for Cats and Kittens provides your feline with the most complete spot-on treatment. Fleas, ticks and chewing lice are no match for the active ingredient: fipronil. This ingredient prevents all flea stages (eggs, larvae, pupae) from developing, and it also kills 98-100% of adult fleas on your cat within 24 hours.

Besides completely stopping the development of new fleas and completely breaking the insect's life cycle, it also kills all stages of 4 major ticks including those that may transmit Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. It's completely waterproof.

Tick prevention in pets is very important in areas where there is exposure. Spot-on treatments like Frontline are a major advantage, since most collars don't work well because they often don't ward off ticks attaching to areas near the hind end of the cat.

Cat-specific treaments like these are also gentle enough for use on kittens. It even provides your dog with protection. In addition to monthly applications, your pet may also benefit from the regular spray, which kills fleas and ticks on dogs and cats. It's great for controlling emergency flea and tick infestations. Frontline sprays do not contain the potentially toxic insecticides found in most pet store sprays.

The medication collects naturally in the hair follicles and oil producing glands and reapplies itself continuously to the skin and hair. Until now, it could only be obtained by an expensive visit to your veterinarian who probably charged for the office visit AND veterinary prices for the prescription. You can now get some of these medications with all their advantages over the counter:

* Once a month treatment
* Kills fleas AND ticks
* Packet contains enough product to last three months
* Can be used on cats and kittens 12 weeks or older
* Many online suppliers offer discounts, especially if you purchase in bulk

Frontline Plus for Cats also contains (S)-methoprene, an insect growth regulator, which prevents insects from maturing and reproducing. While many cats live with fleas and show minimal signs of infestation, control is advisable because the cat flea carries the larval stage of the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum. Cats can be infested with these worms by eating fleas during grooming.

Facts About Fleas Here are the reasons why preventing infestation is a good idea:

* One flea can produce 2000 eggs in its lifetime
* Fleas can reproduce year-round in southern climates
* Pets can become re-infested from sources other than the home, such as parks, kennels, backyards and woods.

Flea Prevention In Cats

By Dr. Ed S

Flea control has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 15 years. From pills to topical formulations, the vast array can confuse even the savviest of pet owners.

In mid-1990’s, Program™ (Lufenuron) made its debut. This pill was the first medication of the new flea control programs. Program ™ was effective, but limited based on its method of action. Program ™ causes larvae to be unable to hatch. Adult fleas are not killed by this product. The adult fleas must naturally die before your pet receives relief from fleas. Sentinel ™ is a medication that contains both a heartworm prevention and Lufenuron. Neither Program ™ nor Sentinel ™ are effective at eliminating adult fleas to give your pet immediate relief.

More recently, Advantage™, Frontline™ and Revolution® have made their marks in the pet community. Which medication is right for your pet? Well, it depends on the outcomes that you desire.

Revolution is a topical medication that is absorbed into your pet’s body. It is formulated for both cats and dogs. It is effective in preventing heartworm disease, fleas, and ticks. There are a handful of other organisms that Revolution will treat/prevent, please discuss this with your veterinarian. The medication is extremely effective prevention for all of these parasites. It requires a veterinary prescription to be able to obtain and apply the medication. For this reason, it can be difficult to obtain from online sources. Many veterinarians require a periodic (usually annual) heartworm test before writing prescriptions or filling a request for Revolution.

Frontline Plus is another topical medication. It too is formulated for both cats and dogs. There are also varying weight ranges to properly treat your pet. Frontline Plus kills ticks and adult fleas on contact. It is effective on eggs and larvae. Frontline Plus is advertised to be waterproof. However, there is no claim that Frontline Plus is shampoo-proof. Some of the shampoos (especially OTC shampoos) are harsh enough to strip Frontline Plus from your pet. To help protect your pet fully, follow these suggestions. One, talk with your veterinarian about a shampoo that will not strip off Frontline Plus. Two, if you use a harsh shampoo, re-apply Frontline 24 hours after your bathe your pet. By waiting 24 hours, oil builds back up on your pet’s skin which is necessary for Frontline to effectively spread across your pet’s haircoat. Frontline Plus will kill up to 100% of fleas on your pet within 24 hours of application.

Advantage/Advantixx is yet another effective topical medication. Advantage is effective in controlling fleas. Advantixx is effective in controlling fleas and ticks. Advantage/Advantixx holds a claim to be water-resistant. Again, it does not hold any claim to be shampoo-resistant or proof. If you bathe your pet, wait until your pet is completely dry before re-applying the medication. There is no need to wait a full 24 hours before re-applying as there is for Frontline Plus. Advantage will kill up to 100% of fleas on your pet within 24 hours of application.

There are numerous other products on the market. They were not mentioned because the medications listed above are the best on the market at this time. Advantage, Frontline Plus, and Revolution will cost a bit more than other products, but they are worth the cost when your pet’s discomfort is relieved quickly and effectively.

Frontline Plus For Cats Flea Control

By Johnny Moon

Fleas

Fleas are no fun for anyone (except perhaps themselves.) They're no fun for your cat and they're no fun for you! Obviously if you are reading this article then you are interested in getting rid of your cat's fleas with Frontline Plus for Cats. If that's the case then please continue reading on as I want to tell you my experience with the product.

My Story

I have two cats and a few months ago they both started up with a bad case of fleas. And that's normally how it works, if one of your cats have fleas then they probably all have fleas (and your dogs too!) I'm still not quite sure how they got these fleas. But of course once your cats have fleas, the question of where they got them becomes much less important than how to get rid of them.

Frontline Plus for Cats

I'd heard a lot of good things about Frontline Plus for Cats from some friends and also online. I was somewhat skeptical that it would work as well as advertised, but it turns out I had no reason for such skeptism. It really does work like a charm and from everything I've read it's also very safe for you and your cats.

Ticks

A great benefit of Frontline Plus for Cats is that it also kills ticks. While ticks are not nearly as common as fleas they are actually far more dangerous. They can carry very deadly diseases which can actually kill people who are infected with it. The most dangerous such disease is Rocky Mountain Fever.
